Water - The Universal Solvent

Why is water called universal solvent? Solvent is any substance which is able to dissolve another substance. Water dissolves more compounds in it than any other chemical and hence the Universal Solvent. Why is water so special? Its mainly because the water molecules are polar in nature (Boring!). Why is it important? Its important as most of the processes in our body (as in most of the living organisms) happens in liquid medium, water being an important constituent. So all our body processes are dependent on this property of water be it digestion of food or transfer of oxygen to all the body parts.

Kidneys filter out waste from body, water washes it down dissolving it.
